Emerald Harmony

5 Cruise Highlights by Brittany Rowe, Marketing Coordinator, US

Last month I had the opportunity to experience my first ever river cruise aboard the Emerald Destiny. I’m happy to say the Splendours of Europe cruise exceeded my expectations. From the airport transfer and warm welcome from the Cruise Director when arriving at the ship, to the beautiful sights during the excursions, and everything in between, there was no shortage of memories to bring back and share with friends and family at home. And now I have the pleasure to share with all of you my top highlights from our Splendours of Europe River Cruise.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

1. Amsterdam Bike Tour

Biking through the Dutch countryside, right outside of Amsterdam, was such a relaxing and refreshing experience after being in the city center the day prior. There were many picturesque views from windmills and quaint houses, to grassy fields and farm animals. Before making our return trip, we also had the chance to view the whole countryside and Amsterdam in the distance from the top of an old church, which was an unexpected surprise!

2. Drachenburg Castle

I chose the DiscoverMORE excursion in Cologne, which is a visit to Drachenburg Castle. Located atop a hill in Koenigswinter, the visit was filled with stunning views, both inside and out. I was amazed by the panorama over the Rhine, which could be seen from the windows of the castle today, but not back when the original stained-glass windows were there. After World War II, all but one window were destroyed.

3. Our lively Activity Manager, Brett

On all of the Emerald Waterways European river cruises there is now a crew member dedicated to keeping people active and having fun throughout the cruise. Brett, the Activity Manager on our ship, kept the crowd entertained from yoga and aqua aerobics, to trivia and game shows. He was a great addition to the cruise by adding fun activities during down times and livening up the nightlife.

4. The scenic town of Rudesheim

The main center of Rudesheim is very quaint and lined with restaurants, shops, and beer gardens. The first stop during our time here was to Siegfried’s Mechanical Museum Cabinet, which has a collection of unique automated instruments. Afterwards, I took a cable car ride up to the top of the hill, which boasts scenic views of the many vineyards (since Rudesheim is known for its winemaking) and the Rhine River.

5. The Ship and the Amazing Crew

I was wowed by the stunning decorations in the lobby, the spacious lounge and Sun Deck, and the comfort of my cabin. Not only was the ship itself relaxing and comfortable, but the crew and the service they provided is what really was the cherry on top. They were there for my every need, sometimes without me even having to ask!
